Consultancy

In a consulting activity they objective is to determine…

  1. The value chain your business is in now and your business proposition.
  2. How it will be in the future.
  3. How to transition your business from its current position, based on its current skills to where it needs to be.

I came from an Audio, Video and Telecommunications background in the Consumer Electronics industry. My area of interest is moving ahead into more connected industries starting the Smart Home and connected products. But new industries (often connected) are beginning to appear e.g. self driving cars. Self -driving cars could transform the industrial landscape in a way more comparable to the arrival of normal driven cars in the early 20th century. No matter what the three key points listed above are always the starting point.

The Audio Equipment Industry

Take as an example the consumer audio industry. It has undergone a huge transition. It is still characterized by  a huge diversity in product offering. From small compact Audio Hi-Fi systems, High end audiophile products to completely networked audio products to mobile products. There is no other consumer technology industry with this much diversity of products both in form and function.

A parallel industry and one more often in the public’s eye is the (recorded) Music Industry. This has transformed from consumers getting their music on CD’s through to downloading and now to streaming. Obtaining music on CD’s was the ONLY means to obtain music right up to the middle 1990’s. Then with the advent first of PC’s with CD ROM drives and later internet and P2P sharing, the genie was out of the bottle.

The Music industry has been struggling ever since to devise a new profitable business model. The audio industry, the makers of your Hi-Fi and Headphones have also been transformed beyond recognition. The computer is now the most popular form of finding new music, the smartphone one of the most popular means of playing music. But to develop and make these connected audio products requires completely new skill sets e.g. computer networking, that were only available in other industries e.g. the computer industry. The audio headphone industry grew from being an accessory to a mainstay of the audio equipment industry.
